Disaster EU farming policy is HATED across Europe – Brexit means we can FINALLY scrap it

Disaster EU farming policy is HATED across Europe – Brexit means we can FINALLY scrap it
EUROPE’S disliked common agricultural policy is the “least successful” programme on the continent and needs to be shelved in favour of a new British version after Brexit, an expert has said.

Warwick Lightfoot said the CAP was “massively expensive” and “poor for consumers” and called for the UK to take new measures as it leaves the European Union.

Speaking on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, Mr Lightfoot, director of research at think-tank Policy Exchange, said: “The starting point has got to be that the least successful policy in Europe has been the Common Agricultural Policy.

“Massively expensive, poor for consumers, poor for trade and very, very distorting in all sorts of ways.

“You would start out from first principle thinking, all countries have a farm policy of one kind or another, how do you have a farm policy that works.

Warwick Lightfoot, director of research at Policy Exchange

“The starting point I think should be identifying with the consumer, putting the consumer at the heart of it and trying to get back to an a approximation of UK food prices being closer to world food prices.”

Tim Breitmeyer, deputy president of the Country and Landowners’ Association, was also on the programme and said the UK now had a “unique chance” moving forward.

He said: “The Common Agricultural Policy was a policy designed for 27 countries.

“We have a unique chance now to make a policy I think that is much better both for farmers and for the consumers going forward.

“We have to face the fact though that we have lived in a marketplace for 40 years that has asked us to abide by regulation and animal health and welfare standards, all of which have a cost attached to them.

“To move away from that market we have had for that period of time, is going to take time and I think a headlong dash to free tariff trade will produce significant problems for the farming industry in this country in the short term.”

A major new report reveals Britain has a “once in a generation opportunity” to slash the cost of food and improve the countryside when it frees itself of the EU’s hated CAP.

The study, co-written by Mr Lightfoot, has given a damning assessment of the EU’s infamous farming subsidy system which it says have raised prices in the shops, supported inefficient farmers on the continent, lessened competition and “at great expense” reduced agricultural productivity.

The Farming Tomorrow report concludes that free of Brussels rule Britain can end a protectionist system which puts money into the pockets of wealthy landowners and allow for free trade deals with the rest of the world.

Policy Exchange says that the immediate benefit of leaving the European Union will be to cut tariffs for products with the rest of the world which will make it cheaper to buy food not produced in this country.

The think tank also recommends the UK should replace the CAP with a new British Agricultural Policy which focuses on payments for ecosystem services to improve the countryside and environment.

It says the government can phase out production subsidies and income support by 2025.

A huge part of the EU budget, i think something in the order of 75%, is on farming substances. I recall the early days of the Butter mountain and Wine lakes which the UK were instrumental in stopping but little change has happened since.

Of cause in the main France have been the beneficiaries of the financial support and will be devastated when we stop contributions. This is why the French are so vocal about us leaving.

Nigel Farage wrecked the UK
Well, your Brexit is sick as a dog. People with no brains voting for something they do not have a clue about. Bricklayers from Middlesbrough knows nothing about intra-EU-trade or what membership of the EU is means and the freedoms it gives.
When the UK crashes out of the EU in 2019 it will be total chaos. Kent will be one big lorry park.
I know many nice British people but Brexiteers are the most stupid “Britishness self-obsessed” pathetic fools on the planet. Thank God we will soon have no more violent football fans from the UK let alone tattooed fat bodies at our beaches.

Hopefully this will stop the flood of Irish EU meat coming to this country when we have plenty of British producers. We need to support our own farmers.
