Ireland is plotting to take the UK’s EU agencies once it leaves the bloc

Ireland’s Department of Health and Department of Finance are competing against other EU countries to host European Banking Authority (EBA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Both the EBA and the EMA are currently based in London’s Canary Wharf.

The agencies employ just over 1,000 staff between them.

The Irish Department of Health confirmed: ”Ireland’s offer to host the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has today been submitted to the Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union.”

The department also said Dublin meets all of the criteria necessary to successfully host the EMA and presents an attractive option for the staff of the agency to relocate to.

Ireland’s Minister of State for Financial Services and Insurance, Michael D’Arcy, said a relocation to Dublin would be the least disruptive move for the EBA and its staff.

Mr D’Arcy said: “Our transport links to Europe, our culture, language and skilled multilingual education workforce make Dublin an attractive destination ahead of other potential locations.

“Given the economic and strategic benefits for Ireland, we are making a strong proposal which includes incentives to support the relocation of the EBA and the establishment of a Relocation Group to aid the relocation of the Authority.”

Around 20 cities, including Dublin, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Paris, and Prague, are reported to be keen to host the agencies.

They are all keen to attract the agencies’ highly skilled employees, their families and the business that comes with them.

This includes about 40,000 hotel stays for visitors each year.

The European Commission will assess the entries based on the quality of office space, job opportunities for spouses, good “European-oriented” schooling and transport links.

Accessibility and efficient infrastructure are the top two agreed criteria.

A final decision on the relocation is set to be made in November.

What is the problem with Ireland having the agencies, they are EU agencies of course they will go somewhere else after we leave. They are not being ‘snatched’ we are leaving the group which provide them, stop making countries look sinister for wanting something we are leaving. It;s all part of our leaving the EU nothing else.

The agencies are prized not only for the jobs but also for their potential to act as hubs for finance and pharmaceuticals, two of Europe’s most important industries.

Bye bye jobs, bye bye businesses, bye bye revenue and taxes, bye bye prestige and world standing. Well done brexiters.

He said Ireland has very good transport links to the EU. I’m trying to think how that could be.

I think he must be talking about if you go over the UK mainland first – just like most of their road freight. I’d say that puts Ireland in a rather fragile position, as we could refuse use of the UK as a route, any time we like. Eg if Ireland causes any more Leaving problems.

It would be a good idea to be very nice to us.

I’ve seen lots of comments on here saying the ROI’s EU citizens are our friends. With friends like these, who needs enemies, as the saying goes. We’ve been taken for a ride for years by both the EU and the ROI, time to leave them behind.

Ireland can have the agencies for all that I care, the less this country has to do with Frau Merkel’s Fourth Reich the better as far as I am concerned.

The UK is already trading with the rest of the world through 750 trade agreements and treaties negotiated heavily in the EU and UK;s favour!!

The UK will have to start from scratch, including drawing up its own WTO schedules as the current ones were negotiated by the EU!

March 2019 is coming!

Without commenting on the pros or cons of Brexit I do feel our British friends are “whistleing past the graveyard” with some of their dismissive comments on potential losses of business from London. Some of the HEAVY STUFF will migrate to Frankfurt so dont be surprised if Ireland picks up some of the small EU agencies. The fact that the ROI is an English speaking country should benefit their applications. On another subject, it has just been announced that Paris willl host the 2024 Summer Olympics. That should improve Ireland’s chances of hosting the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It would be unfair to give the French two bites of the apple as they’re also bidding on the 2023 RWC. Go Go the Paddies.Chartfinder

UK has the 5th larges economy still. Ireland sits in 40th position. To put that into perspective, Nigeria is in 27th place. The UK certainly isn’t failing, but gave you looked at Greece, Italy and Spain lately? UK has a worse economy than Greece and Spain? Please….

Well done Brexiters, more of your fellow citizens have lost their jobs or have to make the decision to leave the country. And still not one of you can name an upside to this sorry mess. Fools.

More jobs are being created than lost.

These agencies comprise employees from across the EU, the European Banking Authority has only existed since 2011.

This is no great loss, in fact it will free up space for proper businesses to fill.

Alors! My German friends envy Brexit. Such a referendum is not allowed under their constitution. They hate what Frau Merkel has done to their country. Much is not reported, the authorities and media exercise a form of censorship. They read foreign newspapers to learn what is happening at home.

If you want an upside – read what Continental politicians have said –

Claud Cheysson, former French Foreign Minister and member of the European Commission:
“The Europe of Maastricht could only have been created in the absence of democracy”

Klaus Kinkel, German Foreign Minister
“Politicians should have the courage to take decisions….against the will of the people”

Raymonde Barre, French Prime Minister and Commissioner
“I have never understood why public opinion about European ideas should be taken into account”

Costas Verras, President of the Brussels Association of Journalists
“The Commission acts like a military junta”

The UK will regain its sovereignty. It is escaping the democratic deficit!
