The former Scottish National Party MP, a long-term critic of the US president, was asked whether “it is wise” to torment Mr Trump when the UK is bidding to sign a monumental free trade deal with the US.

Messrs Trump and Salmond have long since seen eye to eye, after the billionaire businessman clashed with the former SNP leader over a wind farm located off the US President’s golf course in north-east Scotland.

During an appearance to publicise his Edinburgh fringe show, Mr Salmond said: “I had two years when I couldn’t say anything about him because he was suing the Scottish government.

“Donald is one of those people who sees his development as the most important thing on earth. But anyone else’s development is an inconvenience… He went to court three times in order to delay it and lost three times.

Alex Salmond grilled on his criticism of Donald Trump in wake of Brexit talks with US

I don’t think Donald Trump is going to be around as long as it takes to make a trade deal

Alex Salmond

“I probably didn’t help things by texting him, once, twice, three times a loser. I got one of these 2 am in the morning tirades about being a has been and a nobody – and that was before I lost my seat.”

While appearing on RT’s Going Underground, Mr Salmond was grilled over whether his, or any other British politicians, criticism of Mr Trump was constructive while post-Brexit talks rumble on.

Journalist Afshin Rattansi said: “With Brexit, we now know all the nations of the United Kingdom are going to have to make a trade deal with the United States.

“Is it wise to be willing the antagonism of Donald Trump… on the part of any British politician?”

Mr Salmond replied: “Well, to kind of guess, I don’t think Donald is going to be around as long as it takes to make a trade deal, in my estimation.

“But more told than that, the problems with a trade deal with the United States… Look, because I’m critical of the Donald, and because I’m going to make a few revelations that won’t come as a surprise, it doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s a tough negotiator.

“If the United Kingdom enters into a trade deal with the United States of America from a position of supreme weakness, which is what the position is at the current moment, then the terms of that deal will favour the United States – And Donald Trump, it would be against his entire nature to do anything else.”

He warned “chlorinated chicken would be the least of our worries” when International Trade Secretary Liam Fox attempts to strike a deal with Donald Trump.

Mr Salmond hinted Mr Trump, a formidable commercial negotiator, will strike a deal which only benefits the US.

Mr Trump announced his involvement in the “major” trade talks by taking aim at the “very protectionist” European Union.

He tweeted: “Working on major trade deal with the United Kingdom. Could be very big and exciting. Jobs! the EU is very protectionist with the US. stop!”

Does anybody really think that the President of the US gives a damn about motor mouth Salmond and his petulant tantrums? Trump is more likely to listen to comments by the Mayor of Much Binding in the Marsh than worry about anything Wee Eck blusters about.

Have long since seen eye to eye? Um, does this writer not understand that that means they DO see eye to eye? And does this paper no longer employ editors to catch mistakes like that?

Anyone else notice Salmond is being less than honest AGAIN?

He’s forgetting to tell anyone that he is the only reason Trumps golf course went ahead. The local council refused the planning permission. Salmond called in the application, and over turned it.

That was for a reason.

Salmond was begging Trump to step in and soften the blow in the US about the snp releasing the mass murderer, Megrachi. Trump refused, and thats when they fell out.

We need badly need Federal UK otherwise it is bound to break-up again as it did 100 years ago when South of Ireland left

– They left for same reason as Scotland might

– UK is run solely for the interests of \London and South of England

If we had Federal UK with Scotland, Wales, Northerm Ireland, Yorkshire, London, Cornwall & Dorset etc being autonomous states

– then like in US, we would have a Senate replacing the Lords that would have equal representation from each state

– in this way federal countries like US and Germany protect poorer and less populous regions from being bullied or overruled by richer, heavily populated regions

Good idea about replacing the Lords with a Senate under a Federal System. Two from NI, two from Wales, two from Scotland and two from each of the nine English Regions.

Anyone who pays to go and listen to this old fool at the Edinburgh Festival needs their head examined. He’s like the creepy old uncle of the family who needs close watching. His whole career has been one of bluster and failure and it was long overdue that the public saw through him and sent him packing at the last election.

You should always listen to your opponents
– otherwise you will not be able to counter them
– that is the only reason I read this rag the Express which is so outrageously anti-EU it would be laughable until you realise there are many people who believe much of what is written here
– likewise I read Guardian because I dont like their ‘politically correct’ nonsense either

If ever there was a case of jealousy then this must be it, Salmond probably isn’t president of his own bed let alone the voice of reason for Britain, I heard he lost his watch after the general election as well.
