It was ‘IRRESPONSIBLE’ to allow British public to vote on Brexit, says Richard Dawkins

David Cameron’s decision to hold a referendum was criticised because it allowed people to make a “hugely complicated” decision on Brexit “on a whim”, says biologist and author Richard Dawkins.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Professor Dawkins refused to identify himself as a Remainer because he was adamant the decision should never have been left in the hands of the electorate.

The professor said: “I’m not so much a Remainer, someone who thinks we shouldn’t have been asked in the first place.

“I think David Cameron took an irresponsible decision in putting it to the country as a simple 50-50 vote.

“It’s immensely complicated, the matter of Brexit, hugely complicated ramifications – we’re only hearing now the ramifications for Ireland.

“These are not matters that should be voted on a whim, on an impulse, by day-by-day people.”

Professor Dawkins said it was “fine” for people who voted using “evidence”, adding: “But many people voted with their gut, probably both ways.”

He believes there was a “great opportunity for emotion” in the referendum, which “clouded” the judgement of voters.

EU spokesperson admits “limited progress” in Brexit talks

“It should have been done by people with sober reasoning,” Professor Dawkins said.

“By people who had really looked into the evidence both ways.”

Britain is still wrangling over its decision to quit the EU as the Article 50 clock continues ticking.

Chancellor Philip Hammond has told business leaders he will negotiate an “off-the-shelf” transitional deal with Brussels, instead of a bespoke deal.

The senior Conservative has pushed for a “standstill “transition leaving companies with full access to the single market and customs union to avoid a so-called Brexit cliff edge, according to the Financial Times.

Mr Hammond’s plan would keep Britain attached to the European Union for at least two years after the divorce concludes in March 2019.

it doesn’t matter whether you voted with your head, guts or a pin what is important we were given the right to express our democratic wishes. Those wishes now have to be adhered to.

Richard Dawkins doesn’t approve of democracy, it, currently, isn’t giving the results he wishes. The alternative is dictatorship and he would find it very difficult to offer an example of a benign dictatorship. Having looked at all other types of government and, despite its imperfections, democracy is still the best system.

The British people have ALWAYS voted for the future of Britain, it is called DEMOCRACY. But we know this is a non-existing word in the vocabulary of the ´global elite´.

The future of Britain voted to remain, so you voted against the interests of the people who are the future of Britain, and they will pay the highest price, as Brexit was based on nothing but ideology. Your plan-less vision of Global Britain was always and always will be a mirage. The rest of the world is laughing at you. You believed and voted for a pack of lies.

I am quite capable of making up my own mind as is the rest of the population. 52% voted to leave, this was not a knee jerk decision but one based on facts given. David Cameron should have been brave enough to action Article 50 before he resigned we would have all had more respect for him and as he did not Teresa May should have done so immediately on being made Prime Minister, if either had acted correctly then all this Remain rubbish would have been irrelevant.

The arrogance of the man is breathtaking. How dare he suggest the electorate is too ignorant to make decisions on the future direction of our country, especially when it relates to the control over our borders, our national sovereignty and the direct accountability of those who govern us. The Swiss have far more referenda on important issues than the UK, and they seem to be doing quite well for themselves!

Dawkins should be thoroughly ashamed of himself. Cretin.

Certainly I wouldn’t let anyone without at least a Degree vote on anything. It’s an absolute minimum indicator of intelligence. We listen to the uneducated far too much in this country. They should know their place and listen to their betters and just accept that they can’t be trusted to make evidence based decisions.

As far as the referendum was concerned, no-one over 65 should have been permitted to vote either. They are too old and the full impact of the vote (either way) would not affect them.

Had to look up who this bloke is. Why on earth should anyone think the opinions of such an upper class snob matter a toss anyway? He obviously assumes that he know what drove many, if not all, of us to vote as we did. He, just as obviously in reality, has not the faintest clue of the reasons which applied – but like many politicians tends to use his own, to me warped, view of things to justify his assumptions.

Brexitards are so easy to wind up, they love to be offended, they love to insult people with opposing views. It used to be a bit of fun, but their refusal to face reality and childish insults, make their comments just rather boring now.

Stupid person!

Overstepped his mark. Because he evidently can’t grapple with the complexities, he imagines no one else can. He finds complexities that simply aren’t there.

He should ponder on the complexities the EU and EZ have brought on themselves. That would give him a right headache.
