Gill Burch had treasured “John David Martin” since he was given to her as a first birthday present by her grandmother. The bear still had on her first shoes when she handed it over to celebrity auctioneer Charles Hanson from BBC’s Bargain Hunt and Flog It!, who will auction it off later this month.

But the retired teaching assistant, of Newthorpe, Notts, admitted: “I missed him last night. “He wasn’t in his usual chair. He is the only toy I had kept all my life. “He was given to me on my first birthday by my grandma.

“I loved him. I never liked dolls so always played with him. I have a photo of me as a child playing with him.” Gill, 66, said the bear had been like a brother to her.

“I called him John David Martin as I liked the names and I wanted a brother.

I was an only child.” Mrs Burch decided to say goodbye to her teddy bear after showing him to Mr Hanson at a charity event for Nottinghamshire Hospice.

The mother of-two said: “Charles and his team were doing free valuations, so I took along my bear to see what he was worth. “

Charles seemed to be quite taken with him and my story, especially as I gave the bear my first pair of shoes, which he still wears.

“He used to have a blue suit, too, which was made for him by my childminder, but it disintegrated.”

“It was made out of an old skirt or dress. I think it protected his fur over the years. I had his paws mended at one time. They were coming apart.”

She added: “I would have liked one of my grandchildren to have taken on the bear but these days children prefer more modern toys to play with.

“You have to accept that times change. I wouldn’t like to think my teddy was sitting in a corner unwanted.

I want him to go to a home where he is adored.

“I decided to let him go to auction with Hansons because, if something happened to me, I wouldn’t want him to be thrown away.

Perhaps someone will buy him and love him as much as I have.
