MEGATSUNAMI reaching 300 foot high and set off by landslide gives warning to scientists
A DEVASTATING mega–tsunami that tore through Greenland destroying homes and hurling enormous chunks of ice onto the mainland has been revealed by scientists as being more than 300 foot (90 meters) high.

A remote part of Greenland was hit by a megatsunami

The giant tsunami crashed into the defenceless village of Nuugaatsiaq, destroying 11 homes and washing four people away on June 17.

Data from a reconnaissance mission revealed the size of the wave that had previously been unknown due to the remote location and alerted locals to the fact another could be on the way.

The mega–tsunami was caused by a landslide and scientists have acknowledged that landslides in bays can rise to incredible heights, travel at devastating speeds, and cause massive destruction.

Authorities in Greenland are now preparing for the likelihood of a further landslide could crumble into the bay at any time.

As a result of the ongoing hazard, three villages remain evacuated.

Georgia Tech professor Hermann Fritz said: “The second adjacent landslide remains a hazard, with an open back scarp and wide cracks a thousand meters above the water.

“We had an unusual opportunity to record the aftermath of one landslide and tsunami and the baseline of a potential future event.”

Costas Synolakis, a tsunami researcher at the University of Southern California, said the information was vital as researchers needed 10 such events to create computer models and early warning systems.

He said: “Earlier, we didn’t really believe such extremes were possible.

“But with global warming and sea level rise, such landslides are going to be far more common.”

Professor Fritz travelled to the area to assess the devastation from the tsunami wave.

His team found evidence that the tsunami wave was more than 90 meters high. For comparison, the 2011 tsunami off the coast of Japan, which killed 16,000 people and caused the Fukushima nuclear meltdown, was no taller than 40 meters.

Professor Fritz continued: “The essentially undisturbed semi-circle spreading of the tsunami waves results in massive decay of the surveyed tsunami run–up heights compared to the initial tsunami height.”

The huge icebergs that were hurtled ashore handed vital information to the team about the nature of the wave and a warning about the importance of a landslide falling into deeper water and a larger fjord system.

Professor Fritz added: “At these depths, tsunami waves travel about the length of a football field every second, so the tsunami wave arrived very fast – probably on the order of five minutes for this village 30 km away.

“That left very little time to react.

“The combination of a small earthquake from the plunge of the landslide, the sound, and unusual motion in the fjord prompted a spontaneous self-evacuation.”

For sure these types of events have happened throughout the history of the world. The problem though, for todays world, is massive overpopulation and destruction of the very infrastructure that once helped to balance the climate. Those who think I’m just another green ranter should take a look at places like the Amazon rainforest, or Madagascar and the “sapphire rush”: Tens of thousands of miners and gem traders have poured into the rainforests around the village of Bemainty, said local officials. The miners have cut down thousands of acres of forest in the protected area, which environmental group Conservation International helps to manage, said the officials.

The island nation is renowned for its biodiversity, and the protected forests in the eastern corridor are one of Madagascar’s most precious resources, according to the World Bank. The corridor is home to more than 2,000 plant species found nowhere else on earth, and 14 endangered species of lemur, according to the environment ministry.

Once again corruption is at the very core of NOTHING BEING DONE to PROTECT our world.

Are these the same scientists that have been WRONG every single time about the westher? About warming? About deathly storms? About rising oceans? About what causes heart disease? About the hole in the ozone layer? In fact about pretty much every single doom prediction they’ve ev er made? Geez, is it a slow news day presstitutes?

There is still this big chunk of the Canaries that can fall in and cause a Tsunami here.
Absolutely nothing we can do about it.
Those of us living near sea level are doomed, I only hope I fall of my perch before it happens.

‘…Journalism?

Doesn’t exist anymore, Middle Englander. Not in the sense you and I know.

It’s all copy and paste – Mistakes INCLUDED.

The days of Hacks going around Ice-Cream factories looking for a scoop (lol) are LONG GONE.

I could forgive the poor quality of story if ONLY they would use correct grammar and SPELL correctly. Considering we have spell checkers at the push of a button, there REALLY is no excuse, other than laziness and no pride in a job well done.

Apologies for the rant, but YOU started it!’
