This would ‘FINISH Northern Ireland’: Anger as Dublin demands Brexit SEA BORDER
THE REPUBLIC of Ireland has demanded ‘sea borders’ following Brexit in an attempt to avoid a return to a hard division with the north of the island.

Dublin is pushing for an ’invisible’ land border with the north after the UK leaves the European Union, with customs and passport checks to take place at ports and airports across the entire island instead.

This would essentially create a new border surrounding Ireland as a whole, a move one expert said would mean “conceptually, Northern Ireland is finished”.

Kevin Meagher, former advisor to Norther Ireland secretary Shaun Woodward from 2007 to 2009, added: “British and Irish political elites need to plan for reunification.”

Unionists, however, have responded with fury to the plot and remain absolutely dedicated to ensuring Northern Ireland remains in the UK and out of the EU.

And last night one high-ranking DUP politician even claimed Dublin’s demands would instead lead to a further division of the island.

Ian Paisley Jr, son of the volatile founder of the DUP who argued against the Good Friday Agreement, tweeted: “۱ of 2 things will now happen 1. A very hard border 2. Ireland will wise up and leave the EU.”

In reality both of these scenarios are extremely unlikely given the emotional opposition to any sort of physical border in the north and the broad support the EU across the entire island – including the north, where a sizeable majority voted to remain in the bloc.

Theresa May’s Brexit ministers are now said to be reeling following the Irish government’s surprising new proposal and rapidly-hardening stance.

The UK had proposed keeping the current Irish border invisible after Brexit by using technology and CCTV and pre-custom checks, an option which has now been batted away by a dismissive Irish government.

The Times quoted Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney as telling a meeting of EU foreign affairs ministers the proposal “is not going to work”.

He added: “What we do not want to pretend is that we can solve the problems of the border on the island of Ireland through technological solutions like camera and pre-registration and so on.”

The newspaper also quoted one official as admitting Dublin’s “position has hardened” following the appointment of the new taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar.

The official said: “There is a new taoiseach and a new foreign minister and they’re stamping their authority.

“We’re being as positive as we can but it’s true to ay that their attitude has hardened.”

Never worked out why everyone is so blasted fond of the EU. The whole shoddy edifice is built on a lie anyway and it is about as functional as someone who just got tasered.

The solution is simple. By EU law, if there are tariffs on UK goods entering the EU the Border MUST be hard. So don’t have tariffs.

Republic of Ireland! For a country that is near to bankrupt – indeed, saved from bankruptcy by the UK Taxpayer of £۸ billion in 2008 Ireland have a bloody cheek – the UK taxpayer put into Republic of Ireland more than the EU! Next time, Ireland are in a mess, the UK people should tell the Republic of Ireland, ‘you are in the EU now bleed to death.’

If the EU, who are controlling the discussion in Eire, want a hard border, then they (EU and Eire) should set one up, fund it, police it and accept responsibility for any troubles caused by it. Any takers?

All the EU are doing is deliberately creating a new false problem every week.
Time to shut up shop and put our demands out there. The tail is wagging the dog at the moment and we need to stop rising to it.
We don’t owe money legally
You can not have a citizen of one country applying their own countries rule in another country.
We cut make a river from the West coast of Ireland to the East and we don’t need to remember the EU backs onto loads of countries that are not in the EU.
Stop rising to the bait.
Shut shop and wait for them to come begging.

Reality Check (again)
Your ideas are wonderfully realistic. I specially look forward to the river from the West coast of Ireland (which, by the way, isn’t in the UK) to the East.

The problem of Northern Ireland was of course created by the EU, starting with their dastardly settlement in the 1580s …

And I can’t wait for them to come begging. After all, our trade with them is nearly 7% of their total trade.

Reality Check (again)?
You check again alright. Can you please explain what relevance does events that happened over 400 years ago have any answers to solving this complex issue with Ireland, That Brexit has thrown up? And Last time I check, The EU didn’t even exist back then. So I cannot workout how 27 member states are somehow responsible for the dastardly settlement as you put it. Can you? But please, Enlighten us all here.

Are these politicians playing with a full deck or are they on something, does he really think the NI DUP and other groups will allow it to happen, the only reason this idiot has come out with this is because Ireland will be in deep trouble when we leave, their natural link to the EU is via mainland Britain which will be severely hit, and another hard knock to their economy will make Ireland another Greece.

EU/UK citizens rights – NO AGREEMENT
EU/UK divorce bill – NO AGREEMENT
NI border – NO AGREEMENT
and we haven’t even got started on a trade agreement

what a mess, and dont give me that ‘just walk away’ rubbish we simply cannot do that unless we are prepared to accept a 10-20 % drop in GDP and up to 8 million lost jobs

Well said – love the way the English here are making sweeping statements about incomes being lower in Eire – they should google incomes and they would be very shocked. Comments about inflated GDP are laughable because it was the Irish and not the EU that have changed the calcs to GNI* – still very healthy figures – UK debt is 89% of GDP so people in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks

There are four provinces of Ireland. Ulster, which is one of the four, is comprised of 9 counties – three of which are south of the boundary line. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Really Northern Ireland consists of 6 counties: Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Down, Armagh and Londonderry NONE of which are south of the border. You are talking about the historical division of Ireland into four provinces, for cultural and historical reasons, they have NO political or administrative purposes. The only confusion is in your head

Ulster is the ancient name for ALL of Ireland. Northern Ireland, which took the name ‘Ulster’, or ‘The Province’ has SIX counties: Antrim, Down, Armagh, Derry, Fermanagh and Tyrone. The remainder are South of the border in the Republic of Ireland, formerly known as ‘The Free State’. Hope this clears up any confusion.

Let’s propose that they have a soft border with free movement of people, no passport checks, between the south and the north. I don’t think anyone will be too happy at having to show their passport to move between NI and the rest of the UK are they? So anyone who wants to come into the UK will just travel via Ireland. Is that what you want?

Id prefer UK government spend billions on NHS not building crazy electronic borders that wont work and arent wanted either! – for NI Dublin proposal is a win win though DUP supporters are so crazed in their madness to be ultra-british that they wont take open offer of special staus for NI ie – remaining part part of UK and remaining part of the single (irish & EU) market – no border – continued peace – all for the cost of having to show their UK passport or UK driving licence to get on a plane????
BTW Republic doesnt want unification but wont admit it – they are very happy with the way things are – so are most Ulster catholics but wont admit it – and most ulster prods like myself like (but wouldnt say it too loudly) having the unique privilege thanks to Belfast agreement of having automatic right to UK and Irish(EU) passport – so brexit will be ok for us over here – dont waste OUR UK taxpayer’s money on a pointless customs border between north & south of Ireland – my britishness is not so shallow it relies on my having to constantly prove it or get somebody to acknowledge it – we need to cop on to ourselves and stop being stupid about this now!

I dont see the problem with Dublin proposal, it is the cheapest and best solution – Northern Ireland which voted to remain in EU btw would have best of both worlds – free access to GB and Irish (EU) markets – as regards passports travelling to GB, most low fares airlines require passports to travel domestically or internationally anyway – what difference does it make? – the alternative is the UK taxpayer having to pay billions of pounds to build a border that is unenforceable and that would be a target for every smuggler, organised criminal and unreconstructed republican nutjob in NI – as regards precedence – Canary Islands are part of Spain but not in EU, Aland part of Finland but not in EU – no big deal – Europe is full of constitutional oddities – a bit of common sense and less xenophobia is required – this is a distraction, the most important thing is a trade deal for UK, not scratching the sectarian itch of DUP followers who dont know how good they got it – as a proud ulsterman and brit, I say go for sensible option – keep it simple stupid as they say – not ridiculous ‘technological’ solutions – when was the last time a public sector IT project came in on time at a sensible price – never – I dont mind proudly showing my UK passport to get on a flight to London or anywhere!!!!!

ReplyShare1 reply

Reality Check (again)
Mmm. I agree with many of your points, but I’m afraid that it’s not possible for NI to have completely unrestricted access to both UK and EU markets – if they did, it would be an open conduit for smugglers the world over. Now to have practical access to both, and only have to demonstrate rules-of-origin conformity, could be worked. Or indeed a bit of a bilnd eye to small-scale smuggling, as happend at the momene.

I am not surprised the ROI doesn’t want a border, it was reported in BBC NI today that students from there are attending FE colleges in NI at a cost to the UK of £۵m per year and guess what, the ROI won’t accept the bill. This is added to by previously reported information that people who live in the ROI, who have relatives in NI, are using that NI address to get their kids into NI schools. It seems that politicians in the South are not willing to look at any solution, even the one between Norway and Sweden. They talk about the peace process but it seems that it is they who are putting it under strain.
