‘Why on earth should we pay?’ Nick Robinson attacks British Gas boss on shock price hike

‘Why on earth should we pay?’ Nick Robinson attacks British Gas boss on shock price hike
THE boss of Centrica, which owns British Gas, was subjected to an intense grilling by BBC host Nick Robinson after the company announced a shock 12.5% increase in electricity prices.

Iain Conn, chief executive of Centrica, told the BBC’s Today Programme that the price rise announcement was due to government imposed policy costs.

But Mr Robinson jumped onto the fact that wholesale prices for electricity have actually fallen since the start of the year

The presenter said: “You are pointing your finger at ministers, what is it you are claiming they are now making you do that they weren’t making you do for example a year ago two years ago, three years ago?”

Mr Conn hit back saying: “Governments have had to make some very difficult decisions about the future of the energy system and the way in which we currently pay for that is through the bill.”

“What we’ve been seeing over the last year is a progressive increase in these cost over the last year.

He said that his company had been selling power at a discount but this was no longer viable adding: “Our own efficiency efforts have kept this at bay for some time and that’s why British gas was able to offer our customers a price cap, even after this increase we are going to be significantly cheaper than the average electricity price.”

But this provoked a stern response from the Today presenter. Robinson said: “You say you are not pointing the finger, but customers will. Three million Brits are going to pay 76 pounds a year more than they are now when you have acknowledged that there is no increase in the wholesale price of electricity.

“Now they may say transmission that is your fault. Policy that is the government’s fault. Why on earth should we pay while many people’s wages are going down in real terms?”

Mr Conn replied: “Well certainly 3.1 million of our eight million customers will be affected. We have announced today that because we are worried about vulnerable customers this winter that an additional 200,000 customers who get a wrap home discount will be protected from the price rise. We are doing that voluntarily.”

But Mr Robinson didn’t let the executive off the hook as he reminded him Theresa May had kicked plans to impose prices on suppliers into the long grass.

He said: “What you’ve seen off is the energy price cap. You should be celebrating this morning, you and the big six. You have said to the Tories, this is a bad idea. They have backed off a manifesto promise.”

Prime Minister May promise to cap prices for consumers but this has since been sent to the regulator for further consideration.

Electricity bills for its customers are set to increase by 12.5 per cent with the higher prices set to come in on September 15, just as temperatures begin to drop.

The average annual dual-fuel bill for a typical household on a standard tariff will rise by £۷۶ to £۱,۱۲۰, a 7.3 per cent increase.

Good, go after the greedy. Now for an in-depth exposé on the cost of a university education. The illiberal left-wing has been gouging families for generations and their fellow travelers in the media have given them a free pass.

Nobody has told us why there is an increase in prices except to say distribution costs have gone up and government costs but no detail. I would have thought that distribution costs should be able to maintain a status quo when wages etc seem to stand still. What are these government costs and how do they apply and why do they have to increase. Could we have a detailed article on this subject.

I’m glad I kept my generator, I’ve got a feeling it’s going to come in handy during the power cuts that are inevitable. As a society we take too much for granted and don’t consider the consequences. Common sense should tell us that if we’re content to let the population spiral out of control, and create hundreds of thousands of new homes to put people in, someone has to find the means and the money to provide the power and services they are all going to want. The housing stock in the small market town where I live is increasing by 35%, and in a nearby village they are building 8,000 new homes.
